Daffodil blooms in late March in one of the Northaven Trail pollinator gardens.

It all started when…

Cultivation Nation, a gardening club based out of St. Mark’s School of Texas and a partner of FLOW, set the goal of establishing ten pollinator gardens along the Northaven Trail over the course of 2 years.

So far, we’ve worked with Cultivation Nation to plant two native pollinator gardens along the trail, and to maintain several raised beds at St. Mark’s. Produce from these raised beds is donated to our partnered food pantry, Jewish Family Services of Greater Dallas Food Pantry.

We’ve also partnered with PlantTagg to enable passersby to identify and learn about each and every plant in our gardens. If you’re ever on the trail, just scan the QR code on the PlantTagg sign for a deeper understanding of the habitats our students are restoring!

MOST RECENTLY,

Cultivation Nation launched a new initiative with which we are assisting: the restoration of the native Blackland Prairie along the Northaven Trail. They are currently focused on a specific, 9000 sq ft area, but eventually plan to expand their efforts to the whole trail. As a project that boasts a focus on upwards of 60 native species and covers such a vast stretch of land, this Blackland Prairie Restoration effort will serve as a flagship model for other trails situated along similar electrical corridors.

We are also working with Cultivation Nation in their efforts to develop a curriculum to educate elementary school students on both native and produce gardening – something that could do wonders to incite passion for areas such as environmental science, botany, and sustainable agriculture.
